This workshop will focus on the NEA grant project known as the Public Engagement Project – its structure and how it has proven successful in many communities around the country in local efforts to close achievement gaps and to create strong family-school-community partnerships. Presenters: Donnell Jordan, CTA UniServ Staff ~ Community Outreach Department; and Brenda Vincent, Sr. Policy Analyst ~ External Partnerships & Advocacy, National Education Association “Getting Down to the Facts: The Real Story of Education Reform” Let's face it. There is an achievement gap. It is not intractable – and we can close it. This session will review the real data behind the headlines. Session participants will also discuss and share ideas to frame the facts about student achievement in their own states. Presenter: Pat Rucker, CTA Legislative Advocate ~ Governmental Relations Department (Note: Available to co-train with NBSN member from another state) “The Hard Lessons of Education Reform” If Race to the Top really was the solution, what was the question? Did the nationwide focus on this single pot of one-time money distract attention from the work that struggling schools need to do? Session participants will review the ethics of competitive free market reforms in RTTT as well as ESEA and the impact on the winners and the losers. Presenter: Pat Rucker, CTA Legislative Advocate ~ Governmental Relations Department (Note: Available to co-train with NBSN member from another state) “Advocating for African American Students and Keeping Your Job” or “Attack on Public Education and its Effect on Black Students” Presenter: Phyllis Peters, CTA UniServ Staff ~ Ontario RRC (Note: Presenter has not selected which workshop she will present or provided a summary yet) “Impact of Generational Differences on Membership” Presenters: Sandra Goins, Executive Director ~ South Bay United Teachers; and Dawn Basurto, CAS President ~ Governmental Relations Department (Note: Presenters have not provided a summary yet) Presenter: Lian Shoemake, CTA Uniserv Staff ~ Temecula RRC (Note: Presenter has not selected which workshop he will present or provided a summary yet) “Attack on Public Education and its Effect on Black Students” Presenter: Brenda Sutton-Wills, CTA Attorney ~ Legal Department (Note: Presenters have not provided a summary yet) Presenter: Merwyn Scott, NEA Legislative Advocate ~ Governmental Relations (Note: Presenter has not given his workshop a title or provided a summary yet) “Exploring Unconscious Bias” Social psychologists and other social scientists have found that all of us, regardless of race, have cognitive biases that influence how we perceive and make decisions about other people. The behavior of human beings is often guided by racial and other stereotypes of which we are completely unaware. This training will explore the shortcuts and subsequent perceptions we make about people and our surroundings. It will also provide tools to increase awareness about our cognitive biases and offer intervention strategies. Presenter: Reena Doyle, CTA HR Consultant ~ Human Rights/Community Outreach Department “NEA Priority School Campaign” (Note: Presenter will be either Sheila Simmons or one of her staff, and I have not yet received a summary) The 2011 NBSN Conference will be at the Hyatt Regency San Francisco Airport in Burlingame, California.
